Botvin & Be Sensitive, Be Brave Programs

Botvin and Be Sensitive, Be Brave (BSBB) are FREE programs through our grant providers, Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Services. YTI staff are trained and certified to teach these programs.

Botvin LifeSkills

Middle School Program
High School Program

The Botvin LifeSkills Training Middle School program is a substance abuse and violence prevention program based on more than 35 years of rigorous scientific research. It is comprehensive, dynamic, and developmentally designed to promote mental health and positive youth development.

Program Learning Objectives:

  • Personal Self-Management Skills – Students develop skills that help them enhance self-esteem, develop problem-solving abilities, reduce stress and anxiety, and manage anger for better mental health.

  • General Social Skills – Students gain skills to meet personal challenges such as overcoming shyness, communicating clearly, building relationships, and avoiding violence.

  • Drug Resistance Skills – Students build effective defenses against pressures to use tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.

Sessions: 12 sessions

Time: 50-60 minutes/session

The Botvin LifeSkills Training Transitions program is a highly interactive, skills-based curriculum designed to promote positive mental health and personal development. This program helps young adults navigate the transition into the workforce and/or higher education. 

Program Learning Objectives:

  • Personal Self-Management Skills - Provides participants with strategies for decision-making, managing stress, and managing time and money.

  • General Social Skills - Enables participants to strengthen their communication skills and build and maintain relationships in a variety of settings.

  • Drug Resistance Skills - Empowers participants to understand the consequences of substance use and risk-taking.

Sessions: 6 sessions

Time: 50-60 minutes/session

YTI has implemented Botvin at Evergreen Valley High School, Oak Grove High School, and Piedmont Middle School.

Be Sensitive, Be Brave

Be Sensitive, Be Brave for Mental Health

Be Sensitive, Be Brave for Mental Health infuses culture and diversity throughout a foundational workshop on mental health. It prepares community members to help friends and loved ones during times of distress. Participants learn how to recognize mental health conditions, what to do when someone needs support, and tools for maintaining good mental health.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify if someone is in mental distress

  • Practice being sensitive and brave in helping others

  • Increase awareness of mental health resources

  • Build resilience using a recipe for mental health

  • Build cultural sensitivity around mental health

  • Respond to community needs and decrease stigma

Be Sensitive, Be Brave for Suicide Prevention

“Be Sensitive, Be Brave for Suicide Prevention” infuses culture and diversity throughout a foundational workshop on suicide prevention. This free workshop teaches community members to act as eyes and ears for suicidal distress and to connect individuals to help.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify signs of suicide

  • Ask if someone is considering suicide sensitively and confidently 

  • Connect individuals with the appropriate support

  • Approach suicide prevention in a culturally sensitive manner

  • Respond to community needs and decrease stigma

The Be Sensitive, Be Brave (BSBB) workshops are 1 1/2 hours long each. This program is suitable for teens and adults. BSBB has been implemented at organizations, teen youth councils, and for SJSU students.
