This awesome stop motion animation was created by students at YTI's winter break camp during winter break of 2024. Students learned how to storyboard, create clay characters, and use the Stop Motion App on iPads. Once again, YTI had the absolute pleasure to send Tricia Creason-Valencia, a documentary filmmaker in the Bay Area, to students in a Latino Literature class at Lincoln High School in San Jose. Tricia taught the students about personal narrative storytelling through two different projects that culminated in a final short film project about their personal experiences. The students had a final showcase where they got to show off their wonderful projects from the "10 Things That Scare Me" short podcasts, "I Am" visual poems, to their final group short film. During YTI's Sunnyvale Summer break camps, students in Sunnyvale had the opportunity to learn from a local teaching artist, Trisha Leeper, to create their very own stop-motion claymation videos! Students created their own short films and then came together to make one final project. AACI Youth Programs were proud to host their annual SLAM Youth Conference in-person this year at the East Valley Family YMCA! Through hands on workshops and presentations, the SLAM Youth Conference gives Santa Clara County teens the opportunity to learn about professions in the fields of sports, leadership, arts, and media. This year’s conference featured AACI’s Director of Advocacy, Vaugh Villaverde, SJ Earthquakes Creative Manager, Tazio Thompson, and Artist/Educator/Graphic Designer/Community Connector, Jessica Gutierrez. Tricia’s Personal Narrative Storytelling YTI teaching artist and Emmy nominated documentary filmmaker Tricia Creason-Valencia taught her Personal Narrative Storytelling workshop at Lincoln High School in San Jose, CA last Spring of 2022. During this six-week workshop, Tricia taught students from Jaqueline Cohen’s Latin Literature class about photography and filmmaking through a personal narrative lens so they could tell their personal stories. The students created many videos during the course of six weeks and these videos are from their “I Am” poem projects. Students were given the prompt “I am” to create a poem about themselves, where they come from, and the things and people that make them who they are. YTI and AACI partnered with SJSU Public Health Department students from Professors Vicky Gomez’s and Melissa McClure Fuller’s public health classes. Students (Camila G, Lien D, Cheyenne B, Ryan S) learned how to create a podcast with media teaching artist Emily Parent from Midpen Media. They received guidance from YTI staff and Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Services staff on the topics and content of their projects.
